Teen Advisory Board Member of the Month
Meet the first teen honored as our Teen Advisory Board Star Member: Kate Probolus
Kate has volunteered at many of our teen events including gaming and movie nights. In addition she regularly comes to the library in the afternoon to shelve books and help on craft projects for the summer reading program. During vacation week, Kate went above and beyond the call of duty (the wings helped with that!) and assisted with the Fairy Tea Party. Congratulations Kate!

College Admissions 2.0

Can't decide which school is right for you? Having a hard time deciding where to apply? Don't miss this program!
We are hosting a program titled "College Admissions 2.0" featuring admissions officers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Tuesday, May 6, at 7:00 p.m. Ben Jones, Associate Director of Admissions and Director of Communications, Matt McGann, Director Institutional Research, and Bryan Nance, Director Minority Recruitment will participate in a panel discussion, and share their insights on the changing environment of the college admissions process. College fairs and campus tours are quickly being replaced by blogs, podcasts, and social networking sites as the method of choice for recruiting prospective students. Prospective students are now connecting with admissions officers via instant messaging, and creating online admission portfolios and videos to set themselves apart from the competition.
Based on their experiences as admissions officers at one of the nation's most tech savvy universities, they will advise teens and their families how to navigate this new interactive process. The program will provide tips for evaluating the e-marketing efforts of any college or university, not just MIT, and explain how students can take advantage of these virtual tools to assist with the decision-making process. As a January 2008 Boston Globe article, titled "Colleges Turn to Web Tools in Hunt for '08 Freshmen," notes "hundreds of colleges are recruiting through sites where high school students post searchable personal profiles," and that "Technology is changing the admissions landscape very quickly."
Parents and students of all ages are encouraged to attend.

Teen Advisory Board Meeting
The Teen Advisory Board will meet again on Sunday, April 6 at 2:00 p.m. in the library auditorium. Refreshments provided.
We will work on:
Plans to remodel the teen room and vote on a new color scheme and select favorite furniture items for pricing. I'd also like to get feedback on the new iMac computers in the Teen Room. I know that some popular sites are currently blocked and certain software applications have been requested. This is the meeting to weigh in with requests.
Ideas for Summer Programming. Traditional Summer Reading programs didn't generate much enthusiasm at the last meeting. The official theme for Teen Summer Reading in Massachusetts is X-PECT THE UN-X-PECTED. Bring your best suggestions for events.
The video Public Service Announcements project is moving forward. I'd like to narrow in on a few topics for announcements and coordinate filming and editing teams who could work through the summer.
See you at the meeting!
Teen Movie Night

Join us Saturday, March 22 in the Library Auditorium for a showing of Disney's Enchanted. Doors will open at 6:30 and admission is free, and so are the snacks!
Enchanted, starring Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey is rated PG and runs for 1 hour and 47 minutes. Please plan to be picked up no later than 9:00 p.m.

Middle School Gaming Night

The Brewster Ladies' Library is hosting a Middle School Gaming Night on March 8, from 6:30-8:30 to celebrate Teen Tech Week (March 2-8). Teens ages 12-14 are invited to Tune into Video Games during this free play event. Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and Wii Sports will be on hand for teens to test their skills. The event is limited to 50 participants, so please sign up! Refreshments will be served courtesy of generous donations from Super Stop & Shop of Orleans and BJs Wholesale Club of Hyannis.
Teen Tech Week is a national initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) aimed at teens, their parents, educators and other concerned adults. The purpose of the initiative is to ensure that teens are competent and ethical users of technologies, especially those that are offered through libraries. Teen Tech Week encourages teens to use libraries' non-print resources for education and recreation, and to recognize that librarians are qualified, trusted professionals in the field of information technology.
The library recently purchased the Wii gaming system with the support of grant funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. The Brewster Library was awarded this federal grant to improve services to Tweens & Teens.
